Claude chat vs Cowork vs Claude Code: which one to use for what
Claude chat vs Cowork used to be a choice between two modes. Since September 16, 2026, they're one Claude on Pro, Max and Ultra: you ask, and Claude decides how much agent work the request needs. The choice that's left is between that Claude, for answers and finished documents, and Claude Code, for building software on your own computer.
We read the top-ranking comparisons on November 7, 2026, and none of the independent ones mentioned the merge, which changes the answer for most people. Here's how the three compare today, from Anthropic's own help center, academy and docs.

Claude chat vs Cowork: what changed when they merged
Until September, Cowork was a mode you switched into, and the advice was simple: chat when you'll be there for every turn, Cowork when you can describe the deliverable once and walk away. That advice still describes the two kinds of work, but on merged accounts you no longer pick. Ask for a recommendation and you get a conversation; ask for a reconciled spreadsheet and Claude starts a task.
Anthropic moved Pro, Max and Ultra over in stages and reached Enterprise on October 23. Team and Free come later, and Free still has chat only. Once an account moves, it can't switch back. If you still see a Cowork option in your message box, your account hasn't merged yet, and the old choice still applies.
Claude Code vs Cowork: same engine, different jobs
Anthropic's own description of Cowork is Claude Code's agent abilities brought to work beyond coding, so the overlap is real. The split comes down to three things:
- The work. Claude Code is built for software: it reads your repository, edits files, runs your tests and makes commits. Cowork is built for documents, spreadsheets, decks, research and changes across business apps.
- Where it runs. Claude Code works on your machine. New Cowork tasks run in Anthropic's cloud, and in October Anthropic began pointing people who want tasks to run locally to Claude Code's desktop app instead.
- What they share. Plugins you add are saved to your account and show up in both, but each loads different parts of them. Chat ignores a plugin's agents, hooks and local tools, only Claude Code loads its programs and settings, and Cowork doesn't read Claude Code's settings folder on your computer.
Which to use: a simple rule by what you want back
- You want an answer, an opinion or a draft to react to: chat (on merged accounts, just ask).
- You want a finished file, a report, a deck, or a change made in your apps: Cowork (on merged accounts, just ask for the deliverable).
- You want software built, fixed or changed: Claude Code.
- You want it every week without asking: a scheduled task. Both Cowork and Claude Code can run scheduled tasks in the cloud.
Do Claude chat, Cowork and Claude Code share usage limits?
Yes. Everything you do in Claude counts toward one set of plan limits: the five-hour limit and the weekly limit. Agent work uses that pool faster than chat, so a long Cowork task or coding session in the morning can leave less for chat in the afternoon. Our guide to Claude usage limits covers how the limits reset and what each plan includes, and Claude Cowork pricing covers which plan suits heavy Cowork use.

Security differences between Claude chat, Cowork and Claude Code
Chat only sees what you give it. Cowork reaches further, so its risks are larger: web pages and files can carry instructions aimed at the agent (prompt injection), and when it controls desktop apps there's no sandbox between it and your screen. Keep it to a dedicated folder and trusted sites, and use Manual mode for anything hard to undo. Claude Code asks before it edits files or runs commands on your machine, so the guard there is how freely you approve. On Team and Enterprise, admins can turn Cowork off, restrict it by role and decide whether its tasks may run in the cloud.

Claude chat, Cowork and Claude Code questions
Is Claude Cowork just Claude Code for non-developers?
Partly. Anthropic describes Cowork as bringing Claude Code's agent abilities to knowledge work, so they share an engine. The differences are the interface, the kind of work, and where it runs: Claude Code works on your own computer with your code, while new Cowork tasks run in Anthropic's cloud.
Can Claude Cowork write and run code?
Yes, as a means to an end. Cowork runs code in its sandbox to build spreadsheets, charts and documents. For building and changing software in your own repository, with git and your test suite, Claude Code is the right tool.
Can I use Claude Code and Cowork on my phone?
Yes, both. Cowork is on the web and in the mobile app on Pro, Max and Ultra, and Claude Code also runs on the web and mobile as well as in the terminal, VS Code, JetBrains and the desktop app.
