Claude Cowork pricing: is Cowork free, and which Claude plan do you need?

Claude Cowork pricing is simple once you know the catch: Cowork has no price of its own. It comes with every paid Claude plan, from Pro at $20 a month, and it isn't on the Free plan. What you're really choosing is how much usage you get, because Anthropic says Cowork's agent tasks use your limits faster than chat does.

Most pricing pages for Cowork still list the old Max 20x plan or say Cowork is Max only. Neither is true any more. Here are the current plans, what they mean for Cowork, and the math on which one is good value, from Anthropic's pricing page and help center, checked November 7, 2026.

Claude Cowork pricing by plan

Max

Five times Pro's usage, every five hours and every week.

Ten times Pro's weekly usage, no five-hour limit once verified.

Ultra is the plan that used to be called Max 20x; it was renamed at the end of October 2026.

Is Claude Cowork free?

No. The Free plan has chat but not Cowork, and Anthropic doesn't list a Cowork trial. When Anthropic merged Cowork and chat into one Claude in September, it said Team and Free plans would follow later, but it hasn't said what Free accounts will get. For now, the cheapest way to use Cowork is Claude Pro at $20 a month. If you're still deciding whether you need it, start with what Claude Cowork is.

How much of your Claude usage a Cowork task uses

Cowork doesn't have its own allowance. Everything you do in Claude, chat, Cowork and Claude Code alike, draws from your plan's five-hour and weekly limits. Anthropic is direct that agent tasks take more capacity than ordinary chat, which makes sense: one Cowork task can read a folder of files, browse several sites and write a finished document, all in one go.

Scheduled tasks count too, even though they run while you sleep. A daily report that runs every morning spends part of your limit every morning, so pause schedules you no longer read. A summer promotion that doubled Cowork's limits ended on August 5, 2026, so guides that mention double usage are out of date. Our guide on how to use Claude Cowork ends with tips that make your allowance last.

Which Claude plan is best for Cowork

Divide each plan's price by the usage it includes and every paid plan costs the same: $20 for each Pro-sized share. Max gives five shares for $100, Ultra ten weekly shares for $200. Paying for Pro yearly is the only discount, at about $16.67 a month. So upgrading doesn't buy cheaper Cowork, it buys more room:

Our guide to Claude usage limits explains how the five-hour and weekly limits reset.

Claude Cowork on Team and Enterprise plans

On Team, Cowork comes with both standard and premium seats; premium seats get five times a standard seat's usage. Admins can switch Cowork off, and it's off by default in organizations set up for HIPAA. Enterprise admins can grant it by role, decide whether tasks may run in the cloud (on by default for Team, off by default for Enterprise), and mark plugins as required or not allowed. Cowork activity shows up in the Compliance API.

What happens when Cowork hits your usage limit

The task stops at the limit, and Claude tells you when it resets. You can wait, upgrade, or turn on usage credits, which keep you working past the limit at standard API rates. Since Cowork and chat share one pool, a heavy Cowork morning can also leave you short for chat that afternoon, which is the most common surprise.

Claude Cowork pricing questions

Is there a free trial of Claude Cowork?

Anthropic doesn't list a Cowork trial. The way to try it is a month of Claude Pro at $20, which you can cancel.

Do I need Claude Max to use Cowork?

No. Cowork launched on Max in January 2026 and reached Pro four days later; today every paid plan includes it. Max only gives you more usage.

Do Cowork and Claude Code share the same usage?

Yes. Everything you do in Claude counts toward one set of plan limits, including chat, Cowork and Claude Code. A long Cowork task and a long coding session draw on the same allowance.
